About Cypress Hills

The Cypress Hills have drawn people for centuries in admiration of their unique beauty. Considered by generations of First Nations people as sacred, the unique area is special and mysterious to all who spent time there.

The beautiful hills rise in the midst of a stunning prairie landscape. Southwest Saskatchewan is awash in rolling hills, coulees and creeks. As one approaches the Cypress Hills, the forested mountains begin to take shape. Pine and spruce trees begin to crawl up the slopes of the hills, which are the highest elevation east of the Rocky Mountains.

In 1989, the three separate areas of the Cypress Hills were declared an Interprovincal Park. The Centre Block is located in Saskatchewan. This is where Cypress Hills RV Park is located, in an area known as the "Shady Nook" campground.

The Centre Block is the most developed area of the park. Fine dining, swimming, fishing, golfing, a general store, souvenirs, gas station, mini-golf and many more amenities are just a stone's throw away.

The West Block is located partially in Saskatchewan and partially in Alberta. Less touched by modernization, it offers rugged adventure and is located near to the Centre Block, creating endless opportunities for day trips and exploration. Once one travels through the West Block, they eventually arrive at Elkwater Provincial Park of Alberta.

Fort Walsh is a National Historic Site of Canada and is also located in Saskatchewan. Here, the splendid scenery of the Cypress Hills mixes with rich history. It is here the massacre of the Nakoda First Nation people took place in 1873. News of the tragic massacre at the hands of whisky traders spread eastward and spurred the Government of Canada to send out the North West Mounted Police in 1875. In 1878, Fort Walsh became the NWMP national headquarters, which forever shaped and influenced Canada's wild west.

In all areas of the Cypress Hills, Mother Nature displays her finest creations. Wildlife viewing opportunities are endless. Elk, moose, pronghorn antelope, white tail deer, mule deer, wild turkeys, golden eagles, lynx, bobcats, badgers, coyotes and even cougars call the Cypress Hills their home. There are many hiking trails to choose from and an array of countless breathtaking views which photographers delight in.
